AMALAKI FRUIT
Amalaki or Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis) is a little green golf-ball sized fruit borne on a small to medium sized deciduous tree of the Euphorbiaceae family, with crooked trunk and spreading branches reaching 8 to 18 m in height. Often called "the Great Rejuvenator", it is regarded as the single most important botanical in Ayurveda tradition for promoting cellular rejuvenation, immune function, and increased vitality. It is one of the three ingredients in Ayurveda's famous Triphala formula valued for internal detoxification.
Modern scientific research has joined the wisdom of ancient Ayurveda dating back more than 5000 years, and discovered that Amalaki boasts a complex chemical profile which includes bioflavonois, polyphenols, tannins, and rich anti-oxidants, as well as many other beneficial phytonutrients and a high concentration of trace minerals and amino acids. Amalaki is believed to contain the most potent and bioavailable source of Vitamin C known in nature, as a result of a unique protective bond created by mighty molecules known as ascorbagins, which are part of the tannin family.
Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a water soluble vitamin, and is especially important to us because the human body is unable to manufacture this and it must be obtained from the diet. Vitamin C is critical for the synthesis of the neurotransmitter, noriepinephrine, which is a key element of brain function and is known to affect mood. It is also needed for the synthesis of collagen,
Vitamin C
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin. Unlike most mammals, humans do not have the ability to make their own vitamin C. Therefore, we must obtain vitamin C through our diet. Vitamin C is critical for the synthesis of the neurotransmitter epinephrine which affects mood and brain function, as well as for collagen which is important structural component of blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, and bone. Vitamin C is also required for the synthesis of carnitine, a small molecule that is essential for the transport of fat to cellular organelles called mitochondria for conversion to energy
Amalaki's phenolic combination of ellagic and gallic acid with the polyphyenols emblicanin A+B provide dynamic power in helping to support overall detoxification while reducing cellular and oxidative stress and protecting the body againts destructive immune-damaging free-radicals. Further anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-aging properties are derived from the superoxide dismutase enzyme and the powerful bioflavanoids quercetin and rutin.
Hundreds of scientific studies have been conducted on Amalaki during the past 50 years, covering everything from its ability to from its support in improving deteriorating eyesight (especially blurred vision brought on by blood sugar imbalances) to its role in
fighting anti-aging properties that help reduce wrinkles, its ability to increase healthy cholesterol (HDL).
Amalaki grows in the primitive unsullied forests of the majestic Himalayan mountains. These mountains stretch from India, Nepal, Bhutan, to Tibet and contain 10 of the highest peaks in the world. Himalaya is a Sanskrit word meaning, "abode of snow". The snowfields which dominate many of the peaks in the Himalayas are permanent and never melt even in the summer. The crystal clear air, sparkling mountain streams, and dense mineral rich soils are among the purest on the planet and present ideal growing condititions and are an important part of developing the remarkable nutritive properties of this revered botanical.
