Nutrition for the Body
What is the Acai berry?
The Acai berry is a rich purple berry that grows on tall slender palm trees in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. Used and valued by Brazilian natives
for thousands of years, The tribes of the Amazon knew of the Acai berry's healing properties and found out that it helped build the immune system, fight infection, protect the heart, and control prostate enlargement. The
Acai berry became popular during the 1990s among local surfers when used in frozen slushy type drinks, and word of its incredible energy boosting powers began to spread. Since then, a great deal of research has been done on the Acai berry, which now holds the distinction of being rated as #1 of the top ten super foods
in the entire world by Dr. Nicholas Perricone on the Oprah Winfrey Show! It has also been featured by Matt Lauer,NBC Today, The London Times, and Vogue magazine.
Unique Properties of Acai Berry
Acai berry is a source of rich organic vegetable protein which does not generate cholesterol during its digestion and is more easily processed and transported to your muscles than animal protein (such as in milk or meat). Its protein profile is similar to an egg. Acai berry has very high amounts of essential fatty acid omegas which help lower LDL & HDL cholesterol levels, including Omega 6, Omega 9 and many more. The fatty acid profile of the Acai berry is similar to olive oil.
The Acai berry also contains the leading source of flavonids called anthocyanins (the red-blue phenols which give the berry its royal purple color) which provide its incredible antioxidant power. Acai berry boasts 2x the antioxidant power of blueberries, 5x the power of commonly used Ginkgo Biloba herbal therapies; 6x more than Noni,
Wolfberry, and Mangosteen, and from 10-33x the antioxidant protection of red wine. Anthocyanins also contain anti-inflammatory qualities, and these are believed to be the major contributing factor of the French having the lowest rate of heart disease in western civilization, despite their diet high in saturated fats and cholesterol, as well as a prevalence of smokers!
One of the greatest boasts of the Acai berries is that it has a higher ORAC value than any other edible berry in the world! It is also high in dietary fiber, has a low glycemic index, and contains more than 16
phytonutrients and anti-oxidants, as well as copious amount of trace minerals (Co, Cr, Cu, Mo...) and macro minerals (Ca, Fe). The list doesn't stop there! Acai berry provides generous amount of vitamins including vitamin B1, B2, B3, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Phosphorus, Calcium, and Potassium. In addition, the Acai berry is an excellent source of plant sterols, particularly Beta-Sitosterol which is associated with cholesterol lowering capabilities.
